Is Texting 4 Yr Students?

This week's ECU LEED assignment has given me much to think about. As a language arts teacher, I instruct students in writing. Of course, the state tests them on essay style writing techniques. And, I think we should possess those skills. But...aren't other writing skills important, also? I have had to learn texting skills, and how to write those types of messages. That type of writing has become important to me, especially as a way to communicate with my husband and kids! So, I have come to the conclusion that we must all continue to learn the various writing skills needed to compete in today's world, whether it be formal letter writing, research writing, or texting.
Oh well, as my 14 year old would say: C U L8ter.

  1. They are reading, decoding, comprehending, writing, etc. How productive! They are not even having to be forced to participate.

  2. When my teenagers text me they always tell me "Mom, please do not take the time to spell every word correctly that takes too long." I believe spelling correctly is so important, however I am now finding myself using the shortcuts in spelling to get messages to them quickly. I still have mixed feelings about it. Yes, they are reading and writing more.

  3. Rene, yes, I know what you mean! Sometimes it is difficult for me to decode the shorthand of text....wonder if trying to figure that out could help critical thinking skills??? Haha, probably not, huh?

  4. Cindy your blogspot is awesome. You are definitely using it in an educational way. I am still playing around with what I want my blogspot to look like and for what purpose will I utilize it. I keep working with it and hopefully by the end of the course, it will actually be a spot I can use ha ha!

  5. I can feel where u r coming from. My students r always saying U write 2 much. Sometimes, when they text me, I can not understand the shorter version, so I text back and ask to please text in normal language. They smile. It is so important to understand all of this technology just to be able to keep up with the students. One of my worries is that these students may have a harder time writing especially if they have a hard time now spelling the Webster's way. Be Blessed!

  6. I am old school so I believe if our teens continue to spell in the shorter version it will interfere with conventional spelling later.
