The Journal is a site some of you might find interesting! Discusses an array of topics concerning education and technology.

  1. I went straight to the Science Topics and found something very interesting. There is an article "Achieve3000 Adds Science Units to Instructional Resources" that may have just what we have been looking for to use with our 6th graders. I was not familiar with Achieve3000 so I went to the website and learned what the program is all about. From my understanding, the program is somewhat like Accelerated Math, but for reading in the content area. Students are assessed initially to determine the reading level. Teachers determine topics and students read about the same current news events; however, passages are adjusted based on individual learning profiles. Achieve3000 has a data management system for teachers (probably similar to Study Island). The assignments focus on reading comprehension, vocabulary, and writing. Students gain experience in e-mail, technology use, and research skills across all content areas. There is also Spanish capability for ELL students. Sounds wonderful! I would love to see a sample of the program, but did not find it on the site. I will search more. Check it out and let me know what you think.

  2. What a wide variety of topics! I found it interesting that Georgia is redesigning the math curriculum just as our state has been doing. More problem solving and teamwork seem to be a focus area which reminds me of the Kagan Cooperative Learning that Craven County has embraced. I also was drawn to the articles regarding STEM schools because of the prospective STEM school in Havelock - Early College East. This school did not begin this year as had been anticipated due to the budget, but there is still hope. Thanks for sharing this resource with us. It has a lot to offer.
